PATNA: Urban development minister Suresh Sharma said in the state assembly on Monday that construction of the interstate bus terminus (ISBT) on 25.96 acres of land at Bairiya on Patna-Gaya road would be completed by December this year.
The ISBT, to be built with an expenditure of Rs 302.34 crore, is expected to accommodate 3,000 buses per day, the minister said while giving the government’s reply to the House debate on the Rs 5,158.78 crore worth of budgetary demand of the urban development department for 2019-20. The budget was passed by voice vote amid walkout by the entire opposition comprising the RJD, Congress and CPI(ML) members.
The minister said 5.40 lakh LED street lights are proposed to be installed in the urban local bodies of the state. “Of them, 2.50 lakh street lights have already been installed. The project will be completed by December this year,” the minister said.

In response to the question of senior RJD member Abdul Bari Siddiqui, who had moved the cut motion, the minister said his department would take adequate care of his concerns regarding the need for protection and conservation of heritage buildings in Patna. Given the construction boom in the city, it was feared that the government might decide to demolish heritage buildings and sites in the state capital, Siddiqui had said.
Sharma said the government has approved construction of multi-purpose Samrat Ashok Bhavan in 93 urban local bodies. The state has 12 municipal corporations, 49 Nagar Parishads and 81 Nagar Panchayats. The remaining urban local bodies will also be covered by the multi-purpose Samrat Ashok Bhavan in the later phase. The estimated cost for construction of Samrat Ashok Bhavans in north Bihar is Rs 1.39 crore and Rs 1.35 crore in south Bihar.
