Transporters’ body goes to police against fake movers

Gurgaon: The city association of transporters has filed a complaint with Gurgaon police against fake movers and packers operating out of Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road. The association alleged that these firms dupe people by advertising themselves on online service providers like Justdial. An FIR was registered on Sunday.
After taking bookings for shifting of household items at cheap rates, such fake companies extort money from customers for delivery or even sell the goods instead of transporting it to the designated address, stated the complaint filed by Gurgaon Transporters Welfare Association to the Gurgaon police commissioner last week.
The association highlighted that being an industrial hub, a large number of people move in and out of Gurgaon for jobs. Many use online platforms like Justdial to find the contact details of mover and packer firms while relocating. “They get numbers of several numbers of movers and packers, including these fake companies, which don’t have trucks and registration, nor are they affiliated to the association. We’ve been receiving complaints about fraud by Gurgaon-based fake transporters from across the country. The association receives 2-3 such complaints every month,” said H S Sharma, president of Gurgaon Transporters Welfare Association.

Pradeep Modi, general secretary of the association, said there are around 50 such companies operating from Old Delhi-Gurgaon Road. “Most of these fake transporters are from Bhiwani and have set up offices in Gurgaon without registration or permission,” Modi said.
On the basis of the complaint, a case was registered against unidentified persons under sections 406 (fraud) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC at Palam Vihar police station late on Sunday. “A case has been registered and police are investigating the matter,” police spokesperson Subhash Boken said.
