A man who sexually assaulted a woman walking her dogs in a Melbourne cemetery late last month is being sought by police.

The woman was walking her two dogs through Williamstown cemetery about 8.30pm on June 29 when she was approached from behind by a stranger who pushed her to the ground and tried to pull her pants down, police said on Wednesday.

The woman's dogs attacked the man and he fled towards K.C. White Reserve on Park Crescent.

The man is described as being of large build, clad in a black puffer jacket and white beanie.

'We know people congregate at the cemetery at night so we are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the assault, or may have been in the area at the time,' Detective Senior Constable Jenna Sladek said.

Investigators will address the media later on Wednesday to call for witnesses.
