Plea challenges order which declined to declare it as monument of national importance

The Supreme Court has issued notice to the Archaeological Survey of India on a petition seeking protection of the Gumti of Sheikh Ali, an ancient monument here at Defence Colony.

The top court also sought response from the Delhi government on a petition by a Defence Colony resident, challenging a Delhi High Court’s February 20 judgment, in which it declined to declare the Gumti of Sheikh Ali as a monument of national importance.

The petition contended that the monument is an ancient one and a part of the heritage, history and culture of India and Delhi, which is required to be preserved for the generations to come.
