Bihar police with the help of their counterparts in West Bengal arrested kingpin Abhishek Choudhary from his village at Birampur under the Koelwar police station area in Bhojpur district. Tejpal own Asansol-based Alloys Private Ltd. He was released near Barhi in Jharkhand on May 19 after the family reportedly coughed up Rs3 crore as ransom to the kidnappers. Businessman freed after paying Rs 3 crore ransomDuring interrogation, Abhishek revealed that Tejpal was brought to Patna in a separate vehicle and held captive in a flat under S K Puri police station area. Later he was shifted to Bhojpur. The kidnappers had dropped Tejpal near Barhi after realizing the ransom from his family members, an investigating officer quoted Abhishek as saying.
The raiding police team later picked up an associate of Abhishek from the state capital for interrogation. An investigating officer said Abhishek’s girlfriend was also quizzed and taken into custody from S K Puri police station area in Patna. The police traced Abhishek on the basis of information given by his girlfriend. “We cooperated with the West Bengal police,” SP (STF) Sudhir Kumar Porika said.
The police officer said the gang has eight to 10 members, mostly belonging to a particular upper caste. While four members belonged to Bhojpur district, the remaining members were stated to be residents of Patna. “We are keeping a close watch on the members of the interstate gang,” said an IG-rank officer.
Tejpal’s kidnapping had generated much heat in political circles in West Bengal. Abhishek’s mentor Ranjeet Choudhary, a resident of Belaur in Bhojpur district, had told the police that he had sold an AK-47 rifle to RJD MLA Arun Yadav, a charge denied by the lawmaker. Besides, Abhishek’s name had figured in the sensational killing of a businessman of Bihta in Patna rural. He has close links with a Naubatpur-based gang, said a senior police officer wishing anonymity.
Abhishek had been hiding in his village for the last three days. The local residents were surprised over his stay there as he seldom visited his native village.
