CM initiates steps for the project in his constituency

The Dharmadom Assembly constituency in Kannur district represented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to host a global dairy village.

A high-level meeting convened by Mr.Pinarayi here on Monday discussed the steps to be taken for the integrated dairy development project to take off at Vengad village.

The project envisages a modern dairy farm equipped for commercial rearing of Indian cattle breeds like Gir, Tharparkar and Sahiwal and 10 satellite dairy farms.

The proposal seeks to produce 10,000 litres of high quality milk per day. It also involves organic cultivation of vegetables and value added products from cow dung and urine.

A farm tourism centre and production and marketing of dairy products like ice cream, butter, ghee, probiotic yogurt, cheese and functional milk are other highlights.

The meeting decided to adopt modern technological tools and international standards of production and quality control for all the products to be manufactured in the global dairy village. The project is estimated to generate 1,000 jobs.

It is expected to produce 35 lakh litres of milk every year and convert it into value added products.

13,500 litres daily

There are 12 dairy cooperative societies in the Dharmadom constituency comprising eight grama panchayats. The cooperatives together collect 13,500 litres of milk daily from 1,700 dairy farmers.

Minister for Dairy Development and Animal Husbandry K.Raju and Director, Dairy Development S.Sreekumar were among those who participated in the meeting to discuss the project.
