TRICHY: Several factual errors have been noticed in
SCERT Class V social science textbooks. In a chapter on the ‘monsoon season’ it has been wrongly mentioned that the season lasts from December to February in the country. The southwest
monsoon lasts from June to September, while the northeast monsoon (retreating monsoon) occurs between October and December.
The errors were, however, spotted only in the Tamil medium textbooks and ebooks. The school education department is yet to take any steps to rectify the errors.
A teacher from a government school in the city said she noticed the errors when one of her students came with a doubt. “Another glaring error in the book is that the June-September period has been classified as winter season. The
winter season is from December to February. However, the mistakes were not there in the English-medium textbooks,” said the teacher. “I asked the students to incorporate the changes in the hard copy of the textbooks,” she said.
Speaking to TOI, chief educational officer S Shanthi said the errors were yet to be brought to her notice. “If such errors are found, we will write to SCERT and necessary corrections will be made,” she said.
The syllabi of Classes I, VI, IX and XII were revised last year and students from rest of the classes got their curriculum revised this year. Most of the schools have got the textbooks after some delay.
Last year, five mistakes were pointed out by teachers and academicians to TNSCERT, the government agency functioning under the school education department. Following this, corrections were incorporated in the books.
