A. Niranjana, a student of Government Law College here and sister of anti-liquor activist A. Nandini, was detained by the police here on Monday as a preventive measure.
Police said that Niranjana had posted messages on social media and announced that she would stage a protest in front of the law college. The police picked her from K. Pudur. A case under Section 151 of the CrPC was booked and she was released later in the day.
Anti-liquor activist Nandini and her father K. Anandan were arrested and produced before the Judicial Magistrate of Tirupattur in Sivaganga district and were remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Madurai Central Prison on June 27. Nandini was lodged in jail, days before her wedding scheduled for July 5.
“Against legal provisions”
Demanding the release of Nandini and her father without any conditions, advocate S. Vanchinathan on Monday, in a press meet, said that her arrest went against legal provisions.
The advocate said that the activist was not given an opportunity to present an explanation in the case. For an offence under Section 228 of the IPC (Intentional insult or interruption to public servant sitting in judicial proceeding), procedure mandated under Section 345 (1) of the Cr. P. C. should have been followed. A reasonable opportunity to show cause should have been given and a fine not exceeding ₹200 awarded. In the event of default of fine, simple imprisonment which may extend to one month is mandated. Despite the offence being bailable, surety was demanded from the activist, he said. He also demanded the release of Nandini’s sister, who was detained following her protest against the arrest of her sister and father.
