Motif Medical announced today it would donate 500 high quality breast pumps to North Carolina’s Nurse Family Partnership® (NFP) program supporting mothers who are pregnant with their first child.

The July donation consists of 500 Motif Medical double electric breast pumps and breast pump supplies, totaling over $94,000 worth of products. Nurse Family Partnership® will provide the pumps to vulnerable first-time mothers in the state of North Carolina as part of its effort to ensure new moms have the resources they need to responsibly care for themselves and their newborns.

With a core focus on developing insurance-covered breast pumps for women, Motif Medical specifically chose North Carolina for this donation due to the lack of insurance coverage for women with Medicaid in the state.

“We are humbled by the opportunity to donate these breast pumps to an organization dedicated to transforming the lives of less fortunate mothers and their newborns in our community,” said Brandon Fonville, Director of Motif Medical. “Breast pumps are not always accessible to all mothers, especially for those with Medicaid living in North Carolina. The benefits of breastfeeding for both moms and babies are undeniable, and we are thrilled to provide these mothers with products to aid in their motherhood journey.”

Each mother served by Nurse Family Partnership® is partnered with a registered nurse early in her pregnancy and receives ongoing nurse home visits that continue through her child’s second birthday. Since its inception in 2008, NFP has established a presence in the state, with ten locations serving 16 counties.

“A vast amount of research shows that breastfeeding provides babies with added protection against illness and allergies and decreases the risk of postpartum bleeding and breast and ovarian cancers for breastfeeding mothers,” said Connie Toscano, RN, and BCCHS NFP Supervisor. “Unfortunately, some of our mothers quit breastfeeding because they encounter breastfeeding challenges that could be resolved if they had access to a quality breast pump. Motif’s generous donation of 500 breast pumps to the NFP program means that more families will have immediate access to an electric breast pump so that breastfeeding is not interrupted and prematurely discontinued. With this critical support, breastfeeding mothers will be more likely to breastfeed for a longer time, which is one of the major goals of the NFP program.”
