Cop booked for providing weapon for bank robbery

AHMEDABAD: A constable deployed with police headquarters in Shahibaug area of the city was on Sunday arrested by Ghatlodia police for providing weapon, a 7.65mm caliber pistol, for bank robbery. The case pertains to a robbery bid at India Infoline Finance Bank in KK Nagar in Ghatlodia area on Saturday.
The constable has been identified as Gajendrasinh Vihol, 34, who has been working as a cop since 2006, said an official with Ghatlodia police.
On Saturday, a person named Chirag Bhavsar, 25, was arrested after he was pinned down by bank employees and others at a private bank in Ghatlodia when he entered there for robbery with a loaded weapon.
ACP A Division, M A Patel, said that Vihol and Bhavsar were in contact for around 2.5 years. “Vihol had taken Rs 35,000 cash from Bhavsar to arrange him a gun for bank robbery. Besides, Vihol gave an account number of a person from Bihar to Bhavsar in which Bhavsar had deposited Rs 25,000 to get the weapon,” said Patel.
Patel said that Vihol will be booked under charges of abetment in the bank robbery.

On Saturday, Bhavsar wearing helmet had entered the bank and pointed his gun at cashier. Meanwhile, bank manager Ashish Rajpal, who had just at that moment come out of the washroom, threw a tumbler at Bhavsar. When he was being tackled, Bhavsar even fired a round to free himself. But the customers and employees overpowered him. Bhavsar was later handed over to Ghatlodia police.
During interrogation, Bhavsar gave name of the police constable and said that he had met Vihol through a common friend named Darshan Chavda.
