FAIZABAD: A
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader's wife was shot dead in front of her husband on Sunday in Barabanki.
As per reports,
Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) district secretary Rahul Singh and his wife Snehlata were on their way to the latter's parents home when they were attacked. BJYM is BJP's youth wing.
In his statement to the police, Singh said he and his wife left their home late Saturday night. He said a group of men waylaid their car under the limits of
Haidergarh police station area. The BJYM leader said the accused thrashed and robbed him, and then shot his wife. Snehlata died on the spot. However, Singh's in-laws alleged that he had been harassing Snehlata for dowry. They alleged that Singh had killed Snehlata himself and had concocted a story about the attack to evade arrest.
Talking to TOI, Barabanki ASP RA Gautam said, "Singh alerted the police about the incident on Sunday midnight. We have registered a case against Singh and five of his family members under various sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act following a complaint by Snehlata's father Ram Kumar Singh."
