IIT Kanpur to have a medical college
With an aim to move beyond technical education, The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, is all set to have a super speciality hospital and medical college at its campus. The total cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 800 crore and will be constructed on the 20 acre land near the institute. The proposal has been approved by the Institute’s board and a detailed project plan, which will be submitted to MHRD is underway. The committee, chaired by Abhay Karandikar, director of IIT Kanpur, consisting of deputy director and deans of the institute, is preparing the project plan.
“We are focussing on following the pattern of international universities that have different schools for various disciplines. At IIT Kanpur, the department for Biomedical engineering is strong and having a medical division will further strengthen the research in both engineering and medicine,” says S Ganesh, professor of Biological Sciences & Bioengineering and dean of Research & Development. The Institute may also offer integrated programmes in engineering and medicine after the medical unit becomes functional.
