Zhang Shuai became the first Chinese woman since Li Na in 2013 to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

World number one and French Open champion Ash Barty was knocked out of Wimbledon on Monday after losing 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a ferocious battle with 55th-ranked American Alison Riske.

Barty, who had been on a sensational 15-match winning run, was brought down to earth with a thud by Riske, who reached her first ever Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 30th attempt and at the age of 29.

Barty began well, serving four straight aces in the opening game on her way to winning a 21st successive set over the last three tournaments.

Yet Riske, who had spent more than four hours longer on court than Barty in the first week, dug-in for a trench battle, out-slugging the Australian to take the next two sets and set up a potential last eight clash with seven times champion Serena Williams.

Svitolina enters quarterfinal

Elina Svitolina reached her first Wimbledon quarterfinal when the Ukrainian eighth seed beat Croatian 24th seed Petra Martic 6-4, 6-2.

Svitolina, who has never gone beyond the last eight in the majors, will face either Karolina Pliskova or the third seed's Czech compatriot Karolina Muchova on Tuesday.

“I played really good, solid tennis,” said Svitolina after her victory on Court Three.

“It was a really physical match.

“I was moving really good and made some counter-attack shots. I was fighting and feeling good.”

First Chinese to enter quarterfinal

Zhang Shuai became the first Chinese woman since Li Na in 2013 to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

World number 50 Zhang defeated Ukraine teenage Dayana Yastremska 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

The 30-year-old will face either 15-year-old Coco Gauff or former world number one Simona Halep for a place in the semifinals.
