2 drivers, truck meant to ferry narco haul arrested

AMRITSAR: The Customs department has seized the truck that was to ferry the over 600kg of narcotics haul detected by the department last week at the importers’ godown on the international border with Pakistan to its destination following the arrest of two truck drivers.
The Customs officials had became suspicious about the consignment during a routine check and a detailed examination of 600 bags had revealed 15 containing heroin.
In a release issued here on Friday, Amritsar Customs commissioner Dipak Kumar Gupta said that on the interrogation of the importer of the rock salt granules’ consignment from Pakistan, they had identified the truck that was supposed to transport it to its destination for distribution.
“With the help of Jodhpur Customs commissionerate, the truck, along with the two truck drivers, have been apprehended in Rajasthan and brought to Amritsar,” said Gupta.
He said that on the basis of the statements of the truck drivers, truck owner Jasbir was brought to join investigation.

“Jasbir further provided details of the places where the consignment was supposed go for further distribution and Customs teams were sent to those locations,” he said. It appeared that the consignment was meant for Ranjit Singh alias Rana alias Cheeta, a resident of Ram Teeth area.
“It appears that the racket and financing was being run by Ranjit Singh alias Rana alias Cheeta along with truck owner Jasbir Singh and his son Harpreet Singh,” Gupta said. Further investigations were in progress, he added.
