CHENNAI:
After five years,
Tamil was once again heard in the Lok Sabha on Friday during the Budget speech. Finance minister Nirmala Sitaraman, before reading out the details, quoted a poem from Sangam collection Purananooru, which says that a government must not pressurize its citizens by levying heavy taxes. "At this juncture, I find wisdom in a line from Purananooru, a Tamil Sangam-era work by Pisirandaiyaar. The verse , 'Yannai pugundha nilam' was sung as an advice to the King Pandian Arivudai Nambi," said the minister.
The last time Tamil was heard in the House was in 2014, when P Chidambaram was presenting the interim Budget. He had read a passage from Thirukkuṛaḷ: "Not the spear but sceptre swayed with equity alone gives the ruler victory."
