MUMBAI: The state government has set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe into the Tivare dam collapse tragedy, which left 19 dead.
On Saturday, the state soil and water conservation department has set up a four-member SIT led by Avinash Surve, department secretary who is also an executive director of Vidharbha Irrigation Development Corporation.
The SIT will probe into the incident and fix the responsibility. Also, the team will look into various aspects which resulted the accident, and will also suggest measures, recommend how to prevent such incidents related to small irrigation ponds, percolation ponds, small ponds, Malkujari Talav and other similar small dams, in future.
The state asked SIT to submit a report into tragedy within the next two months. The state has issued a government resolution (GR) in this regard, on Saturday.
The SIT led by Surve comprises other three members, chief engineer of the water conservation department, Collector of the Ratnagiri district and police superintendent (Ratnagiri).

Tivare dam in Ratnagiri district’s Tivare village, 250 km from Pune, breached late on Tuesday night, resulting in a torrent washing away of many houses. A massive 100-metre portion of the 308-metre-long dam was washed away, taking in its sweep 19 of the 13 houses in the village and two bridges, officials said.
Talking to media, Sawant on Thursday had said that officials and locals had informed him that a large number of crabs have weakened the wall of the dam, which led the breach of dam.
