Can lead to a blackout if the lone working unit malfunctions

The maintenance officials of the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) are concerned at the delay in taking up repair work of the power transformer in the 33/11 kilo volt (KV) substation located at J.J. Nagar.

The J.J. Nagar substation serves several localities including Elango Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Officers’ Colony, Golden Flats, Anna Nagar West Extension and a section of Mogappair East. A local official of the Electricity Board said normally, in every substation two power transformers would be functional.

If at all the power transformer develops a technical snag, the load would be transferred to the other. Once the equipment is repaired the load would be balanced. However, the damage to the power transformer happened more than a week ago and it was also communicated to senior officials. The damage has to be repaired quickly as otherwise if a snag occurs in the only working unit the entire area would experience a blackout. Though the maintenance staff are keeping constant watch over the working transformer, the damaged one would ease the problems in case of any demand surge.

He cited a similar incident that happened in a transformer a few months ago in Besant Nagar resulting in disruptions for a few days.

The electricity official said the same situation prevails in Tondiarpet substation and the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (Tantransco) has to take steps urgently to set right the problem as otherwise several areas would end up without power supply.
