NAGPUR: Dr Manyukumar Vaidya, 26, a native of Byadgi in Karnataka and a first year postgraduate
student of (MD/MS) in obstetrician and gynaecological (OBG) department of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), popularly known as
Mayo hospital, allegedly committed suicide at the old resident medical officer (RMO) hostel (room No 33) between 6.10am and 9.40am on Friday.
‘I’m going to end my life’ was Manyukumar’s last message to his elder brother Chandrashekhar and three others before taking the extreme step.
Vaidya ended his life by hanging himself from the ceiling fan with a nylon rope. The body was lying on the floor when it was spotted by his colleagues at 9.40am with the nylon rope tied around his neck. The other end of the rope was still tied to the ceiling fan which Vaidya may have managed to reach by standing on his bed.
Stress is likely to have taken a toll on Vaidya. His work day often stretched to 18-20 hours. Vaidya’s room partner Dr Dishant Shingla, who is a PG student of orthopaedics, shared his agony with the police.
Vaidya, who had completed his MBBS from Adichunachanagiri Institute of Medical Sciences in Mandya (Karnataka) was an RMO before taking admission in IGGMCH in March. On May 2, he joined IGGMCH as a junior resident. Vaidya, the younger of two brothers, was an introvert, according to his colleagues. Most of his colleagues and hostel inmates had gone out for dinner the previous night but Vaidya did not accompany them even though he had his own car.
On Friday, Vaidya was to join duty at the outdoor patient department (OPD) at 8am. He had a good record of being on time but when Vaidya failed to turn up till 9am, his colleagues began to get worried. Dr Shingla too was on ward duty and had not returned to the room in the night.
A colleague had called Vaidya at 6.10am asking him to come to the OPD. Vaidya is learnt to have sought another 15 minutes. Unit in-charge Dr Alka Patankar too called up Vaidya but there was no response.
Dr Patankar sent an intern, Dr Balendrakumar Goun, to Vaidya’s hostel. Goun and a security person knocked on room number 33 repeatedly but the door was not opened. The duo checked through the window and spotted Vaidya lying on the floor in shorts and singlet with a rope around his neck.
Dr Goun informed seniors and others, who rushed to the hostel, and the Tehsil police. The cops later shifted the body to the mortuary for post-mortem.
Dr Sagar Pandey, deputy medical superintendent, said the victim’s elder brother (Chandrashekhar) was informed and he is expected to reach the city. “Dr Vaidya had no complaints against anyone and he did not share anything personal or professional with his colleagues or association (Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors or MARD). He was punctual and regular at work,” said Dr Pandey.
Vaidya’s father had no information about the death and it was only when TOI called him in Byadgi he came to know about the suicide.
Tehsil police have registered a case of accidental death. The post-mortem is likely to take place on Saturday.
