Newborn conjoined twins die in SCB

Cuttack: The conjoined twins of Dhenkanal district died at Sishu Bhawan here on Friday night, barely a week after their birth on July 1. “The twin girls, named Ganga Jamuna, who were joined from the chest to the lower abdomen, breathed their last on Friday night after their heart stopped functioning. They shared a single heart,” said Sishu Bhawan superintendent Saroj Satpathy.
The babies were born in Dhenkanal district headqurters hospital and later admitted to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Post Graduate Institute for Paediatrics, popularly known as Sishu Bhawan, here.
Satpathy said, “Their condition was critical since birth. We tried our level best to make the duo stable but their condition worsened with time.” Their condition deteriorated rapidly on Thursday evening following which they were put on ventilator, he added.

The twin girls were born to Renubala Behera and Pradeep Behera of Khalapala village under Parjang block in Dhenkanal district on July 1. Doctors at Sishu Bhawan said the government had assured the couple of bearing all medical expenses for the treatment of their twins. A seven-member team of doctors was formed for the treatment of Ganga Jamuna.
The news of the Dhenkanal twins came at a time when Odisha is waiting to receive Kandhamal’s conjoined twins, Jaga and Kalia, who were separated surgically in 2017 in New Delhi.
