PATNA: The railways has introduced head on generation (HOG) system in at least 10 pairs of mail and express trains with Linke-Hofmann-Busch coaches. All of them originate from different places, falling under the jurisdiction of the East Central Railway (ECR).
According to ECR’s chief public relations officer (CPRO) Rajesh Kumar, the environment-friendly HOG system draws power from overhead lines and distributes it among all the coaches for lighting and air-conditioning.
“Earlier, these trains ran on end on generation (EOG) system, which made use of diesel-fuelled power cars. Although it ensured uninterrupted power supply, it generated a lot of noise and was costly as well. The HOG system, on the other hand, will help save Rs 1 crore in power costs per month,” the CPRO said.
The 10 trains include the Rajendra Nagar Terminal-New Delhi Rajdhani Express (12309/12310), Rajendra Nagar Terminal-New Delhi Sampoorna Kranti Express (12393/12394), Danapur-Anand Vihar Jan Sadharan Express (13257/13258), Patna-Kota Express (13237/13238,13239/13240), Gaya-New Delhi Mahabodhi Express (12397/12398), Saharsa-New Delhi Vaishali Express (12553/12554), Saharsa-Anand Vihar Poorabiya Express (15279/15280), Saharsa-Patna Rajya Rani Express (12567/12568), Saharsa-Pataliputra Janhit Express (13205/13206) and Dhanbad-Ferozpur Gangasutlej Express (13307/13308).
The CPRO said, “The railways is likely to attach additional coaches to these trains in order to accommodate more passengers after permanently removing their power cars.”

Sources pointed out that the railways had decided to replace diesel locomotives with electric ones in a phased manner.
