Will wait for Supreme Court judgment, says Minister

The State government would take all steps to adopt Tamil as the official language in the Madras High Court as well as to publish the judgments of the Supreme Court in Tamil, Law Minister C.Ve. Shanmugam said in the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a special call attention moved by DMK president and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin, Mr. Shanmugam said the AIADMK too was for adopting Tamil as the official language of the High Court.

“With regard to publishing Supreme Court judgments in regional language, we have not received any information as yet. But we are aware of the media reports in this regard. The Chief Justice of India said the judgments would be published in five languages in the first phase,” Mr. Shanmugam said. But the Law Minister was not inclined to accept Mr. Stalin’s demand for passing a resolution in the House urging that the judgments of the apex court be published in Tamil, contending that it would not be appropriate to mount pressure on the judiciary from the part of the State government.

Mr. Stalin said judgments of the apex court should be published in Tamil too, like it was translated in five other languages.
