When will you bring in your modified Sports Quota? HC Asks T Regime

HYDERABAD: The Telangana high court has directed the State of Telangana and the KNR health university to explain the steps they took to restore the sports quota into MBBS admissions procedure. The bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice P Kesava Rao gave this direction while hearing a petition filed by an MBBS aspirant Mamidala Sanjana who was seeking restoration of this quota.
The university was according 0.5 percent seats in MBBS, BDS and other professional courses to those who excel in various sports in tune with the policies of the center and state to promote sports. However, following complaints of fraud being played by the authorities in the name of sports quota, the high court scrapped this quota last year.
Sanjana’s counsel Amancharla Gopal Rao told the court that though the high court scrapped the quota for last year, it gave a direction to modify the current methods of identifying genuine sports. According to him, the modified procedure was supposed to be in place by now and the sports quota should be reintroduced by now, he said. Surprisingly, the health university’s latest notification that declared this year’s admission process, counseling, etc for filling up MBBS and BDS seats, made no mention of sports quota in this year also. The state is supposed to issue a new GO notifying the modified procedure for identifying talented sportspersons, but that was not done. Sanjana is a national player in Judo and secured a NEET rank. The bench sought a counter from the state and posted the case to three weeks.
