Woman strangled under Sukanta Setu

The spot where the body was found
KOLKATA: The murder of a 68-year-old woman — a beggar — at a middle-class neighbourhood near Sulekha in Jadavpur triggered tension in the area early on Thursday. The incident was reported around 7am from Santoshpur Avenue under Sukanta Setu.

“The Survey Park police received information that an aged woman was lying unconscious under Sukanta Setu. The officer on night duty rushed to the spot and found the woman at the spot. When he touched her, there was no sign of life. A piece of sari was tied around her neck. She suffered from mental illness and often used to abuse others. Someone seems to have developed a deep hatred for her and eventually murdered her,” said an officer.
Police said besides manual strangulation marks, she had bruise marks on her eyes and trachea besides head injuries. She was shifted to MR Bangur Hospital where she was declared brought dead. Probe revealed that she had been staying on the footpath for the past three months and earned her livelihood by begging.
