Police have seized an innocuous letter that was laced with drugs after noticing an unusual detail about the mail.

Officers from Wellington Correctional Centre in New South Wales found a 'Happy Daisies' card that was being sent to a 36-year-old female inmate with a strange return address attached.

The card was linked to the address 69 Covert St, Beverly Hills, an address that doesn't exist in the Sydney suburb of the same name.

Upon opening the package, police found a seemingly innocent love-letter, which read 'I love you with all my heart and soul. I hope these flowers remind you of good times.'

'I miss you every day and I can't wait to hold you.'

But that wasn't all police found in the letter, discovering forty tabs of buprenorphine hidden within the cardboard of the card.

Buprenorphine is a prescription heroin replacement, essentially, a drug that helps addicts cope with opiate withdrawals.

Wellington Correctional Centre Governor Louise Smith wasn't impressed with the attempted drug smuggling.

'Given the ridiculous return address, this was a pretty foolish and far from covert attempt to smuggle drugs into our prison,' Ms Smith said.

Out of 100 incidents last year, buprenorphine was the most common item seized from mail being sent to inmates.
