The
Crafts Council of Tamil Nadu, which is affiliated to the
Crafts Council of India, Chennai, has been working for the upliftment of artisans in the country. Through its annual
Crafts Bazaar, it brings artisans from across the country together. The bazaar showcases craft and provides a platform for craftsmen to exhibit their wares to a large customer base. This year there were over 100 stalls from Assam to Kerala.
This year there was a special focus on textiles and artefacts from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana –Khadi, Mangalgiri, Narayanpet,
Uppada, Pen Kalamkari, Ikat, Pochampalli,
Venkatgiri, Pedan kalamkari sarees, Kalamkari and Cherial paintings, leather puppets, wood carving, wooden cutlery, Warangal durries, etikopaka and kondapalli toys.
The other items on display included tie & dye and batik materials, terracotta, metal & bead jewellery, Tussar silk, natural fibre products, silk mats, bamboo runners, mats & handmade baskets, Rajasthani juties, leather chappals , Punjabi juties & Kolhapuri chappals, crystal and cut glass, glass pendants & earrings, lacquerware products and stone craft, dry flower, sea shell handicrafts and dhokra metal items, Madhubani & miniature painting, carpets, zari work, black pottery etc.
Crafts Council of Tamil Nadu (CCTN) has been instrumental in bringing out documentation of temple jewellery and house hold articles and the documentation and publication of the art of garland making. CCTN has been associated in product development with stone craftsmen, palm leaf craftsmen and sheet metal craftsmen.
