GDA plans two pipes for kitchen, sewer water

Ghaziabad: The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) is working on a plan to ensure judicious use of kitchen and sewer water in the city. It is in the process of formulating guidelines for housing societies which will be later incorporated in its building bylaws.
“Waste water has been categorised into two heads — grey and black water. While grey refers to kitchen waste water, black refers to waste water from toilets,” said Asheesh Shivpuri, chief architect and town planner, GDA.
“We have proposed that all future group housing societies lay two separate pipelines connected to each household through which kitchen (grey water) and sewer (black water) will be channelised,” he said.
“Kitchen water, which does not require much treatment, will be stored in an underground reservoir especially built for the purpose. Residents can easily use it for watering lawns and washing their cars,” added Shivpuri.

“Toilet or sewer water will be channelised into the nearest STP (sewage treatment plant) through a network of pipelines. After treatment, it will be used for watering the city’s parks and at construction sites,” he said.
The GDA hopes to limit groundwater extraction which has wreaked havoc with the city’s table. As per the UP groundwater department, the average depletion in Ghaziabad in the last five years, from 2013 to 2018, has been recorded at 4.35 metres. There are at least 12 spots out of total 38 measured in the city table that have gone dry in this period.
