11 killed as private bus collides with van near Chintamani

Cops said the bus driver fled the spot after the collision and is absconding
CHIKKABALLAPUR: Ten people returning from a dargah and their driver were killed when a bus collided with their vehicle near Barlahalli, 15km from Chintamani, on Wednesday. The bus was reportedly tilting to one side as it was carrying too many passengers and rammed the van when the driver tried to swerve.
The accident took place around 11.45am when the private bus was headed for Chintamani from Murugamalla, which has a dargah visited by people of all faiths from across the state and even Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
Hundreds of devotees had gathered at the dargah on Tuesday, which was a full moon day, and many were returning the day after. The private bus, of SKS Travels, operates 7-8 trips a day between Chintamani and Murugamalla, about 90km from Bengaluru.
On Wednesday, the bus had barely covered 8km when it collided with the Tata Ace Magic passenger vehicle. Fayazuddin, 43, a taxi driver from Bengaluru, told TOI that the bus driver, who was in his late 20s, was driving rashly.
Kolar mishap: Bus driver absconding
Fayazuddin had visited the dargah with his family and they were taking the bus home.
“The bus was overloaded and had tilted to the left. When some of the passengers raised alarm about this, the driver in a bid to balance, swerved the bus to the right and collided with the Tata Ace Magic coming from the opposite side. I am a driver and I have never seen anyone driving an overloaded bus like this,” he said.
His mother Kauser, 52, and aunt Taj, 43, suffered injuries in their legs. Irfan, 26, a tailor from Bengaluru, said he had come to offer prayers on new moon day.
Preliminary probe suggest that the bus driver was negligent. He fled the spot soon after the collision and is absconding.
Chintamani MLA K Krishna Reddy gave Rs 25,000 each to the kin of the deceased.
