JAIPUR:
Monsoon is around the corner and residents living around the Kartarpura nullah are fearful of mishaps. Kartarpura nullah has taken a life two years back after which
Jaipur municipal corporation (
JMC) installed railing on both its sides. However, it still seems to be inadequate given to the low height of the bridge which makes it prone to waterlogging during rains.
Vidhyanand, a resident of the area, recalls that a week back during pre-monsoon rains the nullah was flooded. “The bridge was completely filled with water and suddenly a girl driving a two-wheeler slipped. She was about to fall into the drain but caught the railing and was hanging on the bridge. Authorities should think about building a wall on both the sides,” said Vidhyanand. He further said that the pipes under the bridge are usually choked which increases the probability of waterlogging.
Many places in the city faced severe waterlogging during the pre-monsoon rains and district administration had to send machines to pump out the water. There are around 867 small drains and 20 nullahs in the city. As per the JMC officials, the cleaning of almost all the drains has been completed but they are waiting to tender the 20 big nullahs.
However, residents of Nari ka Nakah, Adarsh Nagar, Kishanpole, Govardhanji Ka Rasta and other parts of the Walled City said that no one visited their areas for cleaning. “We have paid from our pockets to clean the drains. During rains, the drains get logged and stench fills the area,” said a resident.
Though JMC officials claimed that there are three flood-control rooms in the city functioning from the fire stations of Mansarovar, Ghat Gate and Bani Park and they are prepared for the rains. A JMC official while talking to TOI explained the JMC’s preparation for the monsoon. “Around 30 members have been working in the flood-control rooms. We have ordered sand bags that will be used in case of soil erosion to fill up the place or roads. These sand bags are very helpful at the time of water logging. We have issued orders to all the community halls not to take any bookings in this season as they can be used during emergency to shift people from slums. We have also ordered tents and mattresses to deal with emergency. We are prepared for the rains,” claimed the official.
