VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh government is planning to convert the irrigation building in the city into an interim Raj Bhavan. Chief minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy has asked officials to make arrangements for the governor's stay at the building whenever he visits the city.
Since the bifurcation in 2014, governor ESL Narasimhan has stayed at hotels during his visits to the city, including the swearing-in ceremony of the chief minister, council of ministers and for addressing joint session of the assembly on June 14.

Moreover, the government also wants to provide accommodation to other VIPs on the first floor of the building. Earlier, Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao visited the city three times in the last 30 days and the government had to provide him hotel accommodation. He is expected to visit the city again soon to continue talks on bifurcation issues and sharing of river water.
The move of using the irrigation building as the interim Raj Bhavan will help the government save on the hotel bills. The irrigation building, located close to Swaraj Maidan, used to be former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu's camp office and was given high security. When Naidu moved his camp office to the first block in Velagapudi secretariat, the building was a transit place for the high court. The government added court halls to house the interim high court. With the HC shifted to Nelapadu the building remains unoccupied.
