DU 2nd cut-off list: Hindu closes pol science at 99%, most courses still open

NEW DELHI: While the benchmark hasn’t moved by much in most colleges and courses, the second cutoff list for undergraduate admissions in Delhi University, released on Wednesday, may bring some cheer for aspirants as two-three off-campus colleges dropped the bar by as much as 5 percentage points in several popular courses.

However, admissions in political science (H) have closed in 20 colleges — including Hindu, where the cutoff was a staggeringly high 99% — while the drop in others is marginal. Admissions for the second cutoff will start from Thursday and continue till Saturday.

BCom (H) seats still open in 50 colleges, English (H) in 39

DU Cut off

The good news is that most of the popular courses are still open in a majority of colleges. BCom (H), offered in 54 colleges, is open in 50 colleges including SRCC, Hindu, Hansraj, Kirorimal, Ramjas and Sri Venkateswara. The drop in cutoff aggregate has been in the range of 0.25% to 3% (in Kalindi).

After a high number of admissions in the first cutoff, colleges played it safe with a marginal decrease in the second, mainly in the range of 0.25% to 0.5%. In a couple of colleges, however, it dropped by 5 percentage points.

The most applied course this year, English (H), is still open in 39 colleges out of 46 in the second list. Colleges such as Miranda, Kamala Nehru, PGDAV and Janki Devi Memorial College, among others however have closed admission for this course.

Another popular course, Economics (H), is open in 32 colleges with highest drop of 3% point in Kalindi College. Among the top colleges where the course is still up for unreserved category are Sri Venkateswara, Hindu, Hansraj, Ramjas, Kirorimal and Dyal Singh, among others. Economics (H) is offered in 37 colleges.

All together over 23,266 admissions took place in the first cutoff with a large number of those in campus colleges. Top colleges, such as Lady Shri Ram, have closed admissions in most of the courses such as economics (H), BCom (H), psychology (H), political (H).

Similarly, at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College there will be no admissions in English (H), history (H), political science (H), physics (H) and chemistry (H) in the second cutoff.

Such was the demand for the political science (H) that of the 44 colleges where the course is offered, it is now open for admission in the general category only in 24. In fact, 10 colleges have closed political science (H) admissions even for the reserved categories. Similarly, psychology (H), another popular course, has been closed in four of the 10 colleges where it is offered. Hindu, along with KMC and Ramjas, witnessed a surge in political science admissions. Hindu saw over-admissions in the course despite a 99% cutoff. Physics (H) has been the top science choice for several aspirants this year where the cutoffs for science courses have not been as high as that of the humanities courses.

Six colleges, of the 24 that offer the course including Hindu and ARSD, have closed admissions in the second list. For those interested in mathematics (H), options are still open at 40 colleges while six have closed admissions in the course.

On the likely surge in admissions at off-campus colleges, principal of Sri Aurobindo College, Vipin Aggarwal, said, “It is normal for aspirants to look to off-campus colleges in the second cutoff list most seats at campus colleges seats are filled up.”

As per the second cutoff, the college has reduced its percentage by a maximum of 1% in an attempt to ward off a rush of aspirants as even a minor reduction of 0.25% could lead to a large number of admissions.
