The garbage sentinel scheme launched on Wednesday by the Margao municipal council took off on a positive note on Thursday, as the municipality received four photographs and video clips from concerned citizens exposing illegal waste dumping in municipality limits.

Giving details of the cases captured on mobile phones, MMC chief officer Siddhivinayak Naik said that till 8 am on Thursday they received 12 photographs sent by the citizens under the garbage sentinel scheme. But only four images qualify for receiving the reward under the scheme. The offenders exposed by the photographs will be fined under the Goa Non-Biodegradable Waste Act 1996 and Rules.

The four garbage sentinels will be paid Rs 1000 each under the scheme.

The municipality refrained from giving details of the garbage throwers and the places where they had been photographed throwing the waste. It is understood that one case was reported at Aquem, near the Costa factory.

On Wednesday, the MMC had launched the scheme to pay Rs 1,000 to the citizens who report illegal dumping of waste through a photograph or video via Whatsapp.

The municipality had said that it would slap a fine of Rs 5000 through the police on the garbage thrower. The garbage sentinel will be paid Rs 1000 for the reported case.
