Finally, underground pipeline leak plugged at Kanaka Nagar

Thiruvananthapuram: Water crisis has been troubling residents of Kanaka Nagar here for years, especially during summers. Now, the Kerala water authority (KWA) has detected and rectified a leak in an old pipleline in the area, giving some relief to the residents.
Modern leak detection equipment had come to the aid of KWA in detecting the leak.
According to PH division (north) executive engineer R V Santhosh, the leak was one of the major reasons for water shortage in the area.
“We used modern detection equipment to identify location of the leak on Sunday. When we excavated, we found that the leak has caused seepage underground. We assume that the leak is several years old. We have replaced the leaked portion of the pipe,” he said.
Back in May, local residents had gheraoed the executive engineer of KWA demanding a solution to the water crisis, which has been troubling them for several months. Despite KWA pumping additional water from Aruvikkara, the water crisis continued to trouble the residents. They had alleged that leak of old pipelines were the major reason for water shortage.

Mosque Lane in Kesavadasapuram is another area which often faces water crisis. KWA officials said that they have done works to ensure water supply in several areas, including Mosque Lane.
KWA has been pumping additional 10 million litres of water per day to the city after several elevated areas faced crisis during summer. Despite onset of monsoon, there has not been any progress in the water level at Peppara dam. The southwest monsoon is 22% deficient in the district.
