The Crime Branch (CB) remand report of former sub-inspector K.S. Sabu and police driver Sajeev Antony, who were arrested on Wednesday in connection with the death of a private financier and cheating case suspect Rajkumar on June 21, has confirmed illegal and cruel torture he underwent at the Nedumkandam police station where he was in illegal custody from June 12 to 15.
The report submitted by Sabu Mathew, Superintendent of Police (CB), described the inhuman torture by the main four accused in the case. Sabu, who could have prevented the torture, joined others and Sajeev Antony manhandled Rajkumar inside the police vehicle in the presence of Sabu at Vandiperiyar on June 12.
As per the autopsy report, there were 22 marks on his body, including deep wounds and contusion. There were fractures and the contusion might have caused pneumonia, which was the immediate cause of the death as per the autopsy report.
The remand report prepared by the Idukki Dy.SP (CB) after consultation with the medical officer, who conducted the autopsy, and physicians, who had consulted Rajkumar, said that the financier was subjected to inhuman torture.
He was unable to stand or walk after he was continuously beaten with an iron rod on his leg palm. The report confirmed that there was malpractices done in the police records at the station to mislead that Rajkumar was arrested from Thookkupalam area on the night of June 15 and he was in custody till June 16. He was produced before the Magistrate Court at Nedumkandam on June 16.
The inquiry team collected evidences from the Peerumade sub-jail where Rajkumar was remanded and any lapses from there in admitting him on time for medical help. The remand report gave details about the circumstances that led to the illegal custody and the lapses of the senior police officials in keeping him in illegal custody. The report said that Sabu had told the inquiry team that he was asked by the top police officer to keep Rajkumar in custody to collect the money he had concealed after cheating the customers on the promise to provide them loans.
