GUWAHATI: Tezpur University (TU), a premier central university in
Assam, has finally received the long-pending nod by the the University Grants Commission (UGC) to open an Assamese department.
At a time when the state has been rocked by movements to safeguard regional identity, sources in the university believe that the move to open an Assamese department is an important milestone towards safeguarding the language.
The board of management of TU, via a notification, approved the establishment of four departments - Foreign Languages, Pharmacy, Design and Assamese. In order to ensure the smooth functioning of these departments, the board also gave their nod to appoint four head in-charges for the respective departments.
Earlier this week, in a reply to Congress MP from Assam, Abdul Khaleque, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the minister of human resources and development, said that the ministry had approved the decision of opening a full-fledged Assamese department in Tezpur University. The ministry had been informed about this decision by the UGC through a letter on March 6.
Tezpur University will now become the third central university of India to get a full-fledged Assamese department after Visva-Bharati and Assam University. The Department of Assamese was established at the Diphu campus of
Assam University in 2010.
The Union minister, in Lok Sabha, also clarified that there was no proposal at present to open a similar department at the main campus of Assam University located in
Silchar.
