MYSURU: Congress Legislature Party leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday locked horns with senior JD(S) minister GT Devegowda over his contention that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president and Union home minister Amit Shah are not involved in destabilizing the coalition government.
While the minister reiterated the duo is not involved, Siddaramaiah claimed Devegowda was wrong and misinformed.
“He (Devegowda) might be under the impression that the two top brass of the BJP are not involved [in destabilizing the government], but it is the BJP which is behind all these attempts to topple the government,” Siddaramaiah said. “Modi and Shah are directing them.”
The comments come in the wake of two Congress legislators — Anand Singh and Ramesh Jarkiholi — resigning from the legislative assembly on Monday. Siddaramaiah claimed Singh, the Vijayanagara MLA, wasn’t upset that he was denied a cabinet berth and, therefore, there were “other reasons” for his resignation.
“He resigned over the row over allotment of land to JSW Steel in Ballari district,” Siddaramaiah said. “He is the sole Congress MLA who has resigned. Ramesh has not tendered his resignation from the House. The letter of resignation, which is being circulated on social media, is not authentic.”
Siddaramaiah said he hasn’t been able to speak to Singh as he is incommunicado. He also insisted the political situation does not warrant a coordination committee meeting.
Meanwhile, Devegowda insisted Modi and Shah have nothing to do with the resignations of Singh and Jarkiholi. While he insisted the government is stable, the senior minister said: “People have voted for the BJP in the general elections. Their verdict is Modi for India and HD Kumaraswamy for Karnataka. Our CM will complete a full five-year term.”
When asked about Siddaramaiah’s jibes, Devegowda said, “The BJP initially did try to topple the government, but after Modi was elected for a second term, the party has stopped attempts to secure power in the state.”
Marathon meeting
Siddaramaiah later held a lengthy meeting with Congress workers from Varuna assembly constituency, which is represented by his son Yathindra. This is fifth meeting in a span of 30 days Siddaramaiah has held with party workers from the segment.
Before the meeting, Siddaramaiah cryptically said he is trying to figure out why Congress suffered a setback in Chamarajanagar Lok Sabha segment, from where V Srinivasa Prasad, a senior Dalit leader, won. Varuna segment is part of Chamarajanagar Lok Sabha constituency.
‘No need to panic’

In Vijayapura district, urban development minister UT Khader also claimed the coalition government is stable and it will complete its five-year term”.
“The resignation of two MLAs is not going to bring down this government,” Khader said. “There is no need to panic. Efforts by the BJP to destabilise this government will not succeed. The government has been working for the welfare of the people. People are not dissatisfied with the work of the government.”
