MYSURU: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, Yajamans (chieftains) of 88 Gadimane-Kattemane (Uppara community habitats) of five taluks in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar decided to end child marriages in the community. Three recent child marriages had shocked everyone as one of them was from the home constituency of community leader C Puttaranga Shetty, also Chamarajanagar district minister.
The decision was taken at a meeting organised as per the directions of C Puttaranga Shetty, also a Yajamana, in Chamarajanagar on Sunday evening.
As per another decision, all parents must ensure that before the engagement, the bride and the bride groom must be allowed to talk to each other before finalising the alliance and they must give consent to take the proposal forward.
It can be recalled that, as per Child Help Line authorities, more child marriage incidents have been reported from the Uppara community which is numerically significant in the Old Mysuru Region.
The meeting was chaired by community priest Manjunatha Swamy and attended by Purushottama Swamiji, Uppara seer from Mangala village, Chinna Swamyji of Ayyanasaragur mutt, and other leaders.
According to M Jayakumar, president, District Uppara Youth Association, who was instrumental in organising the event, the meeting unanimously decided not to allow community members to carry out child marriages and proposed many reforms including laying emphasis on education of girls.
"Recently, three child marriages were reported from the community which embarrassed us. We want our community youths to excel in education, sports and cultural activities. Child marriages are a black spot on the community,” he said. Even though the minister was not present at the meeting, he sent a letter of support and gave several directions. All leaders agreed to enlighten community families against child marriages, he added.
Community leaders from Nanjanagudu, Gundlupet, Kollegal, Yelandur and Chamarajanagar attended this meeting and agreed to go ahead with the reforms.

Rs 4 lakh fine
A major decision was imposing a fine if any family went ahead with child marriages. "The fine will be Rs 4 lakh. We want to ensure an early end to this menace," Jayakumar said.
