NEW DELHI: A 37-year-old businessman is battling for life after he allegedly set himself on fire inside the Nihal Vihar police station on Wednesday evening. The victim, Rahul Kumar, allegedly took the drastic step as the police didn’t act on his complaint filed last year.
The police said Kumar had been admitted to a nearby hospital with over 30% burn injuries and his statement had been recorded. As per a preliminary probe, Kumar came to the police station with a bottle of petrol and after a brief argument with the cops there, he poured the petrol and set himself on fire.
The police personnel present at the spot quickly doused the flame using blankets and water, and hospitalised him. After preliminary treatment, Kumar told cops that he ran a charging point unit, which is used by e-rickshaw drivers. In 2017, an acquaintance had taken Rs 60,000 from him on loan. However, he was paid back only half the amount, triggering a row between the two parties.
Last year, Kumar had gone to ask for the rest of the amount but was allegedly threatened and assaulted by the other party. He then filed a complaint against the alleged assaulters at the Nihal Vihar police station and ASI Vijay Kumar was asked to investigate the case.

However, according to the victim, the investigating officer did not take the necessary action and since then, he had been following up with the IO without any success.
Confirming the developments, DCP (outer) Seju Kuruvilla said the investigating officer had been suspended and an inquiry had been initiated to find out if there were any lapses in probing the case.
