Road safety studies worldwide have shown that road crashes are the leading cause of death of youngsters. This year, Chandigarh has already seen 41 accidents and Mohali district 198. Youngsters account for a large chunk of the fatalities. The main reasons for accidents involving youths is inexperience as well as distracted, intoxicated or reckless driving. Creating road safety awareness, encouraging slow driving and greater vigilance by parents and police can help in saving young lives.

Their families said Amarinder, Taranveer and Manpreet were part of a bhangra group and had gone to perform at Kalagram on Wednesday night. After the performance, they were on way home when their bike skidded and ran into an electricity pole on the divider of road separating sectors 16 and 17. Passersby called up the police, who took them to Sector 16 hospital. While Amarinder and Taranveer were declared brought dead, Manpreet is stated to be out of danger. Police said Amarinder was wearing a turban, but pillion riders Taranveer and Manpreet were without helmets. The three were scheduled to fly to Oman for a bhangra performance on July 10.
