Renowned forensic surgeon and former Director of Medical Education B. Umadethan died here on Wednesday morning following an illness.

He was 73. He leaves behind wife Padmakumari and sons U. Ramanathan and U. Vishwanathan.

The mortal remains of Dr. Umadethan will be kept at the Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram (GMCT), at 9 a.m. for students and faculty to pay homage. Cremation will be held on his house premises at Karikkakam at11 a.m. on Thursday.

Dr. Umadethan, who completed his undergraduate and postgraduate medical education from GMCT, entered medical education service as a tutor in 1969.

He has served as the professor and head of forensic medicine at various government medical colleges in the State and was also the Principal of GMCT.

Dr. Umadethan, who had rendered his service as police surgeon, was also the State Medico Legal Consultant. He had been working as the Director (Administration), KIMS Hospital here, in recent times.

He has written several books based on his varied experiences as a forensic surgeon for the State Police.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the death of Dr. Umadethan. In his message, the Chief Minister remembered how Dr. Umadethan’s expertise in forensic sciences had helped the State police in several crime investigations.

Health Minister K.K. Shylaja also condoled the death of Dr. Umadethan and remembered his valuable contributions while serving the Health Department and the State Police.
