Thiruvananthapuram: In an inspiring act of compassion, the
student police cadets in the city came together to raise Rs 1 lakh for their fellow cadet, who was diagnosed with bone cancer.
On Wednesday, city police commissioner Dinendra Kashyap handed over the cash to the student, who is currently under rest after undergoing a surgery at Regional Cancer Centre here.
She was a Class X student of Chinnamma Memorial High School, Poojapura, when she was diagnosed with cancer last year. She could not write the SSLC board examination as a result of her ailment.
According to city police officials, it was inspector general (administration) P Vijayan and former city police control room assistant commissioner V Suresh Kumar, who suggested the idea of a fund raiser to help the student, who hailed from a financial poor family. The message was passed to all 26 schools under the city limits that have
SPC units. The cadets welcomed the move and happily contributed money. The police officials and teachers who play various roles in SPC project too chipped in with their contributions.
The student’s father, who is a daily-wages labourer, said that her elder sister’s studies too were affected owing to her illness. “Her sister was preparing to join BSc Nursing course, but, we had to use that savings for her treatment,” he said adding that the financial aid from SPC cadets would help in her rehabilitation as well as resuming her sister’s studies. The student is preparing for SSLC exams again this year with the help of home tuition.
