CHENNAI: The Aminjikarai
police on Thursday arrested a two-wheeler rider for abusing a traffic police inspector who stopped him for not wearing a helmet.
The arrested man has been identified as V Joseph Ravindran, 53 of Arumbakkam, who is a truck driver. He has been booked under sections 294 (b) (abusing), 353 (preventing government servant from discharging his duty), 506(II) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, apart from 129 read with 177 (person not wearing helmet liable to pay a fine), 201(1) (penalty for causing obstruction to free flow of traffic) of the Motor Vehicles Act. He has been remanded in judicial custody.
Police said the incident happened around 6.15pm on Tuesday when Aminjikarai traffic inspector Kumar intercepted a two-wheeler near Anna Arch as both the rider and the pillion rider did not wear helmets.
Kumar asked Ravindran to bring the vehicle to the side of the road, but he refused to move from the spot. A video clip of the incident, which was captured by a passer-by went viral on social media on Wednesday.
Ravindran escaped from the spot leaving the two-wheeler behind.
