LUCKNOW: Many important files, computers and furniture were gutted in a major fire that broke out in the finance department of Pradeshiya Industrial & Investment Corporation of Uttar Pradesh Limited (PICUP) Bhawan in Vibhuti Khand of Gomtinagar on Wednesday evening. The fire broke out on the second floor of the building.
Nine fire tenders struggled for over two hours to douse the flames. The fire was reportedly caused by a short-circuit in a computer.
Since key files were gutted in the fire, chief minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a probe to determine the cause of the incident and damages, besides fixing the responsibility. A 3-member committee comprising ADG Lucknow zone, special secretary industry and additional MD UPSIDA PK Pandey and chief fire officer will probe all the aspects and submit its report in two days.
According to police, the fire broke out at 7.15pm. Two employees and a guard present on the second floor intially tried to douse the fire and then informed the police and the fire department. By the time fire tenders arrived the flames had spread to the third floor.
Chief fire officer VK Singh said, "Except the finance department, all other offices in the building had shut for the day when the fire broke out. We are trying to verify the claims of the employees that fire was caused by a short-circuit. Though fire safety systems were installed in the building, it needs to be probed whether they were functional."

Manoj Gupta, deputy manager in the finance department, was present in the building at the time of the incident. He told TOI: "I saw smoke coming out of the chamber of the manager's personal staff at 7.15 pm. Before I could alert the guard, flames started leaping out of the chamber. I, along with my colleague Narendra Kureel and a guard tried to control it through fire extinguishers but in vain. We then informed the police and the fire department and rushed out of the building."
Kureel claimed that police and firefighters came 30 minutes after being informed.
