LUCKNOW: In a shocking twist to the Charbagh shooting case, police found on Wednesday that the victim, Virendra Thakur (45) was not a property dealer and transporter as he had claimed, but a gangster from Bettiah district of Bihar and was facing several criminal cases, including murder. Thakur had shifted base to Lucknow in 2013 following threat to his life from rival gangs and was living in Nilmatha, Cantonment under an assumed name.

Police officials suspect that the attempt on his life was a result of his old gang rivalry or revenge executed in a planned manner through ‘honey trap’.
Thakur had suffered two bullet injuries when he was shot at by two unidentified bike-borne miscreants in a sensational daylight shooting on the crowded main road in Charbagh on Tuesday. He had told police that an acquaintance had called him for meeting.
Police investigation, however, revealed that his real name was Gorakh Thakur and that 17 criminal cases are registered against him in Bettiah and West Champaran districts of Bihar.
SP Government Railway Police, Lucknow division, Saumitra Yadav said, “During questioning, Thakur’s wife Priyanka Singh told us that they hail from Bettiah district in Bihar. When we called Bettiah police, the officials there revealed his criminal history to us and also that his real name was Gorakh, not Virendra. The criminal cases against him are of murder, attempt to murder, arms act, narcotics, extortion and liquor smuggling among others.”

“Thakur was running a gang in Bihar, but when gang rivalries escalated and the threat to his life increased, he shifted to Lucknow with his wife and three sons and started living in Nilmatha where his sister lived with her husband, a subedar in army. He changed his first name and projected himself as a property dealer and businessman, but still continued his extortion and smuggling business in the two Bihar districts with the help of his gang. He had been arrested by Bihar Police in various cases and had been to jail several times and was out on bail,” added Yadav.
Thakur had sustained bullet injuries on his back and right thigh. He is currently under treatment at KGMU Trauma Centre and his condition is said to be stable.
