A young woman was rushed to King George Hospital (KGH) with horrific burn injuries on Tuesday night.
The woman, identified as B. Kavya (25), a resident of Sivajipalem, told the police she was walking home from work when she suffered a ‘freak mishap’. Kavya works as a nurse at a private hospital in the city.
MVP Police Station inspector S. Lakshmoji said that they received information regarding a woman suffering burn injuries at 11 p.m., around half an hour after the incident.
“In her statement, Ms. Kavya said while waiting at a bus stop to return home, her dress accidentally got soaked in some fuel, suspected to be kerosene. She said that she was walking home on Sivajipalem road when her dress came in contact with some sparks emanating from a garbage pile on the roadside,” Mr. Lakshmoji told The Hindu. Ms. Kavya suffered 60% burn injuries in the incident.
Several loose ends
However, Ms. Kavya’s statement seemed far-fetched for the police, who discreetly began an inquiry to verify if the woman was really injured in a freak accident or if she was attacked.
In their initial investigation, police found that there was no trace of any garbage dump as claimed by the woman. Police also learnt that the road on which she was walking home was not the usual route that she took every day.
Police also attempted to collect CCTV footage from several junctions in order to shed more light on the incident, but were unable to find any.
“We are investigating the case from all angles to see if it was really a freak mishap or if there was any attack on her. We are also investigating if there is any suicide angle,” Mr. Lakshmoji said.
