One man is dead and another has been injured when a volcano erupted on the Italian island of Stromboli, sending frightened tourists fleeing into the sea.

The victim was hiking on the volcano about 17:00 (local time) with a friend when a series of violent explosions spewed rocks and lava - igniting several fires.
