Coimbatore: To keep a tab on potential troublemakers in the city, a police team from the special intelligence cell has started monitoring social media like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp for inflammatory or provocative messages.
The team has been gathering the details of people who are posting inflammatory messages to disturb the communal harmony.
City police commissioner Sumit Sharan said police would arrest those posting messages that would disturb communal harmony.
“Our special team from SIC has been monitoring the social media round-the-clock. If anyone posts inflammatory messages to disturb the communal harmony among the people of two religions, we will book them and arrest them immediately. We are always taking neutral stand and would take stringent action against the people who are trying to disturb peace in Coimbatore,” Sumit Sharan said.
A week ago, the Kuniyamuthur police registered a case against A Mohamed Yusuf alias Yusuf Shajahan, 47, of Thiruvalluvar Street at Kuniyamuthur for posting his views against a religion and instigating Muslim youths against another community on Facebook. He was booked under sections 153(A) and 505 (ii) of the Indian Penal Code. Following the FIR, he removed his Facebook post and went absconding.
Sumit Sharan said the city police had already conducted peace committee meetings with Hindu and Muslim outfits individually to maintain the communal harmony.
“We want to maintain communal harmony and peace among the people of Coimbatore city. So, we would like to conduct a joint meeting with leaders from Hindu outfits and Muslim outfits soon,” he added.
