Udhagamandalam: Frequent spotting of sloth bears at Periyar Nagar in Coonoor and near Kotagiri has created fear among locals. They have urged the forest department to take steps to chase the animals away from the residential areas.
Residents of Periyar Nagar spotted a group of five bears in the area on Tuesday. “When we alerted the forest department, officials came and inspected the area and found the bears wandering in a tea estate. They chased away the bears using flame torches on Tuesday night,” said Sekar, a resident of Periyar Nagar. “However, two sloth bears strayed into residental area on Wednesday morning. The forest department should find a permanent solution to the issue,” he said.
In other incidents, a group of sloth bears was spotted at Dimbatty and Uyilatty near Kotagiri on Wednesday.
Saravanakumar, assistant conservator of forests told TOI, “Teams of foresters and guards have been deputed in both the places to monitor movements of bears. Both areas have fruit trees and as it is a fruit bearing season, sloth bears are attracted to fruits.” We have warned the people of those areas not venture out during night hours, he added.
