Notorious gangster Rohit Saandu managed to flee from police custody in Jansath town of Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district.
A police sub-inspector was injured in the shoot out that followed.

The 26-year-old dreaded gangster has 38 criminal cases registered against him. He was lodged in Mirzapur jail in eastern UP and was to brought to Muzaffarnagar for a court hearing.

While he was being taken back, the police posse with Saandu stopped at an eatery in Jansath. While the policemen were waiting to be served, 3-4 men entered the eatery, threw chilli powder in the eyes of the policemen and opened fire. Fifty-two-year-old sub-inspector Durg Vijay Singh was shot in the stomach.

According to police constable Akhilesh Singh, who was present when the incident happened, "After the court hearing, we were going to Mirzapur. We had stopped at an eatery in Jansath. As the meal was being served, 3-4 armed men entered the premises and threw red chilli powder on us and opened fire. We also fired on the attackers but they managed to escape with Rohit Saandu. Our SI sustained bullet injury."
