Alcon Stylus society’s retaining wall was of poor quality: PMC

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has found out that the retaining wall of Alcon Stylus society was of poor quality and not as per the specification of building permission and development department. The civic body had asked College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) to inspect the retaining wall of the society in Kondhwa which had collapsed on Saturday resulting in the death of 15 persons and injuring two others. 

A senior officer from PMC building permission and development department said, “The CoEP has submitted a report to PMC regarding Alcon Stylus society’s retaining wall. Prima facie, the quality of the wall was poor and it was not constructed as per the specification of the corporation norms to construct a retaining wall.” 

PMC City Engineer Prashant Waghmare said, “We have sent show-cause notices to builders, architects and structural engineers of Alcon Stylus society. After receiving their reply, we will take action to blacklist them.”

On Saturday, 15 persons including four children died after a retaining wall of the society collapsed on a labour camp.  

After the incident, District Collector Naval Kishore Ram formed a six-member committee which includes CoEP professors, Additional District Collector, officials of the Labour Commissionerate, Pune police, civic body and Deputy Director Town Planning. 

The committee has started the work and they inspected the spot on Monday. They are expected to file the report within a week.
