Second-seeded Neelash Saha defeated his West Bengal teammate Utsab Chatterjee and maintained his all-win record in the 30th National under-17 open chess championship at the Oberon Mall here on Wednesday.

Saha now has six points from as many rounds while West Bengal’s top-seeded Aronyak Ghosh shares the second spot with Delhi’s Arjun Gupta and Tamil Nadu’s Jayachandra Srinivas (all with five points).

Big upset

Arjun Gupta, the 16th seed, produced the day’s big upset defeating Jharkhand’s third-seeded Vatsal Singhania.

The 11-round championship has just moved past the halfway mark and Saina Salonika, who started the National here with a disappointing draw, is now back in the top pack after defeating Tamil Nadu’s L. Jyothsna, the overnight leader.

Jyothsna, Salonika and Andhra Pradesh’s B. Kalyani share the lead in the girls section after six rounds.
